A Deadly Reenactment
1
The route from Woodville to Chattanooga was one of scenic beauty that had been appreciated by many a traveler over the decades, even the centuries. Long before there was a paved road or highway in this part of eastern Tennessee, people who had passed this way had been struck by an almost reverential sort of awe for the mountains and the flowering woodlands. Tori St. Simon and her friends were no exception to the powerful scenery this bright spring day. Conversation ground to a halt inside the SUV as everyone stared silently at the scenery.
The dogwoods were just coming into bloom and everywhere they looked, the woods and forests were dotted with the pink and white four-leaved blossoms. Here and there, red-leafed maples and other trees provided a backdrop which made the smaller dogwood trees almost pop from the landscape.
Woodville, in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, was home to Tori and her friends. Riding along with her was her best friend from childhood, Jordan Vassey -- who also happened to be the new advertising manager for The Woodville Gazette, the townâs weekly newspaper owned and published by Tori. Dr. Trevor Germaine, the head of the journalism department at the small but academically respected private Woodville College, and Will McMann, Woodville Sheriffâs Deputy, had also signed on for the adventure.
When Dr. Rigsby from the college had first contacted Tori about the trip back around Thanksgiving, Tori had had some serious misgivings. Dr. Amanda Rigsby, the holder of the Chair of Excellence in American History at Woodville College, was also an avid Civil War enthusiast and re-enactor. The re-enactorsâ group, led by Dr. Rigsby, was participating in the re-enactment of The Battle of Chattanooga, which the professor had wryly renamed âthe Battle for Chattanoogaâ. Chattanooga, a major railroad and shipping hub in the late 19th century, was the gateway to the deep South and a bastion against Sherman and Grantâs campaign in the South. Whoever controlled Chattanooga, controlled a great deal.
Toriâs misgivings had been based on what little she knew about re-enactor groups. She tended to think of them as a little too obsessed with the past, and just a little strange in general. Her opinion had been formed by the groups she had seen interviewed on news programs and one less than stellar date sheâd had with a man who was a serious re-enactor. Everything in his life seemed to revolve around re-enacting the Revolutionary War and little else. She found that he was rather inept and socially challenged in any setting that didnât include or involve his fellow re-enactors or in some way relate to re-enactment.
Jordan had persuaded Tori to have an open mind. After meeting Dr. Rigsby, whom Tori found she liked very much, she decided that if Dr. Rigsby was involved, perhaps these re-enactors werenât of the same vein as her erstwhile boyfriend. So here they were on their way to Chattanooga to meet up with Dr. Rigsby.
They had agreed to meet at one of the trendy cafés along Frazier Avenue on the Northshore.
